Gartner has finished conducting an analysis and is predicting a 30 percent jump in the number of connected objects in use in the world from 2014 to 2015, from 3.8 billion this year to 4.9 billion next year, as sensing connected devices proliferate in an Internet of Things (IoT).

The data also estimates there will be approximately 25 billion smart devices in circulation by the time 2020 rolls around.

In 2015, expect the automotive sector to see the highest growth rate of installed IoT units, beating out both generic and vertical business as well as the consumer growth sector.]

Gartner estimates manufacturing, utilities and transportation will drive growth to the tune of 736 million connected things in use in total across those three industries.

Government is expected to rise up the list of connected things in use by 2020 due to smart street and area lighting for energy reduction purposes.

Information security, IT security, operational tech security and physical security are probably all set to change as a result of the rise of the IoT as who governs, manages and operates security within certain businesses continues to transform.

Gartner’s analysis estimates that by the end of 2017, more than a fifth of organizations will have digital security services committed to protecting business initiatives using devices and services in IoT.
