Ionity joint-venture from four major automakers will seek to make a major impact on the fast charging infrastructure across Europe.
BMW, Ford, Daimler and VW have announced they are collaborating in order build a network of 400 fast chargers, as emissions goals continue to rise and electric vehicles become more and more promising.
In the short term, 20 chargers under the Ionity network are being installed this year in Austria, Germany and Norway at 75-mile intervals.
Ultimately, the end goal is to have 400 high-power EV chargers across Europe by 2020, in an effort to compete with Tesla’s Supercharger network.
“The first pan-European HPC network plays an essential role in establishing a market for electric vehicles,” CEO Michael Hajesch said in the news release. “Ionity will deliver our common goal of providing customers with fast charging and digital payment capability to facilitate long-distance travel.”
If successful, the tech will reportedly have twice the charging capacity of Tesla’s offering, so it will be interesting to see how the future fast charging infrastructure all plays out.
