Toyota has announced a rather unique offering in advance of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

First reported by Engadget, the carmaker will begin selling hydrogen fuel-cell powered buses as early as next year in Tokyo.

While hydrogen-powered buses aren’t exactly uncommon, the ability of Toyota’s buses to transform into high-powered external power generator in the case of an emergency is unheard of.

“The Toyota Group considers the use of hydrogen to be a powerful source of energy for the future,” the company said in a statement.]

Features of Toyota’s Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Buses:

  • 10 fuel tanks holding 600 liters of highly pressurized H2
  • Capable of producing 235 kwh
  • Can be used as a power generator to light up an entire school gymnasium

Toyota’s goal is to sell 100 hydrogen fuel-cell buses before the start of the 2020 summer games, a noble initiative aimed at introducing more zero-emission buses to the streets of Japan.
