Monash University researchers have revolutionized batteries by making them more durable and sustainable. These researchers have developed the world’s most efficient lithium-sulphur battery.

They claim it can power a phone for five continuous days. It can allow an electric vehicle to travel more than 1,000km without any need to recharge.

The researchers replaced lithium-ion batteries used in all the appliances with lithium-sulfur batteries.

Mahdokht Shaibani, a researcher of the team, said, “The capacity of the sulphur electrode is so large that it breaks apart over cycles of charging and discharging, and the energy advantage rapidly disappears,”

To deal with this issue, the researchers created a battery in which sulphur particles have more space to expand and contract. This innovative approach helped them in creating the “world’s most efficient” lithium-sulfur battery.

Dr Shaibani said, “The world needs radical new energy storage technologies to fight climate change,”

“Lithium-sulfur batteries, which use extremely high-capacity sulfur, can store five-times as much capacity as traditional lithium-ion batteries, and are made from cheap materials that are available worldwide.”

According to Mainak Majumder, researchers of the team, this technology is going to alter the way phones, cars, computers, and solar grids are manufactured in the future.

He explained, “Successful fabrication and implementation of Li-S batteries in cars and grids will capture a more significant part of the estimated $213 billion value chain of Australian lithium, and will revolutionize the Australian vehicle market and provide all Australians with a cleaner and more reliable energy market,”.
