The Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA) has announced a new solar power project which will be the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant upon its opening.
In total, the massive power plant will be comprised of five facilities located on a single site within the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with the first phase scheduled to be completed some time around 2021.
Concentrated solar power plants like the new one being constructed in Dubai utilize a large array of mirrors to generate energy, called heliostats, of which Dubai’s CSP will feature several thousand of.
It is expected to produce 1,000 megawatts of power by 2020 and an eye-popping 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
For some perspective on the projected energy output, 5,000 megawatts would be enough to raise the emirate’s total power output by 25 percent!
By comparison, Morocco’s Ouarzazate solar power plant will generate approximately 580 MW of power once it’s complete in 2020.
