{"id":3797,"date":"2020-10-27T01:41:54","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T01:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.despatch.com\/blog\/?p=3797"},"modified":"2020-11-02T08:42:20","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T08:42:20","slug":"engineers-study-the-diabolical-ironclad-beetle-for-lessons-in-strength","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.despatch.com\/blog\/engineers-study-the-diabolical-ironclad-beetle-for-lessons-in-strength\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineers Study the &#8220;Diabolical Ironclad Beetle&#8221; for Lessons in Strength"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The \u201cDiabolical Ironclad Beetle\u201d, also known as &#8220;nosoderma diabolicum&#8221;, is a beetle of the Zopheridae family living on the western coast of the United States, and it has scientists baffled with the strength of its outer shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineers from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) have teamed up with a team from Purdue University to figure out what makes the beetle\u2019s exoskeleton a structural marvel.<br><br>The scientists took some poor beetles in for testing and subjected them to a compressive force of 150 Newtons, which is about 39,000 times the insect\u2019s body weight.<strong> <\/strong>This is the point where the first fractures appear at the outer shell, so it&#8217;s the maximum force it can take. Notably, a car tire running over the ironclad beetle exerts 100 Newtons of force, so it can\u2019t crash it. <strong>It goes without saying that trying to do any damage to that beetle by stepping on it is impossible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.despatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Beetle-CT-scan.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3804\" width=\"286\" height=\"152\"\/><figcaption><em>A CT scan of the diabolical ironclad beetle shows how its organs are spaced beneath a super-tough exoskeleton.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.despatch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Delamination.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3803\" width=\"214\" height=\"160\"\/><figcaption><em>Researchers have discovered that the diabolical ironclad beetle can take on a load of at least 39,000 times its body weight before its exoskeleton begins to fracture.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The university teams took CT scans to figure out what individual components make up the exoskeleton, as well as how exactly are the forces distributed when the plates lower down on the insect. The team even 3D printed the individual parts of the shell to further experiment without troubling more real-life insects.<br><br>What the scientists found was that there\u2019s a complex delamination process going on for the structure that keeps the blades interconnected. The blades also lock in place when under pressure, so they won&#8217;t pull out.
