On Wednesday morning, Tesla unveiled it is powering the Hawaiian island of Kauai with solar panels.

And not merely a few solar panels…

Tesla partnered with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) to launch the project, which features 54,978 solar panels capable of 13 megawatts of solar generation capacity.

In association with the project, Tesla has also installed 272 of its Powerpack 2 commercial batteries in order to store the solar energy for use at night.

This is business as usual for Tesla as the company is already powering the majority of the island Ta’u in American Samoa.

Tesla estimates that by bringing 20 years of power to Kauai, the plan will ultimately reduce fossil fuel use by approximately 1.6 million gallons per year.
