It’s only been about a year since China unveiled the Sunway TaihuLight, currently the world’s fastest supercomputer.

Now, state new agency Xinhua is reporting that China is in the midst of constructing the world’s first prototype exascale computer, which is a device capable of making a billion, billion calculations per second.

In fact, Zhang Ting, an engineer at the country’s National Supercomputer Center, said the prototype will be ready before the end of 2017.

However, it is worth noting that the exascale computer would not be full operational until further down the road.

“A complete computing system of the exascale supercomputer and its applications can only be expected in 2020,” said Zhang. “[It] will be 200 times more powerful than the country’s first petaflop computer Tianhe-1, recognized as the world’s fastest in 2010.”

While a other few nations, including the United States and Japan, also plan to eventually build exascale computers, it appears China will be the first to reach the milestone and ultimately set the precedent.
